Fitness Instruction
YMCA Awards Certificate in Fitness Instruction Gym, Level 2
Students will learn correct technique and safe and effective use of gym equipment, in order to instruct clients safely in the gym setting.
This includes how to carry out 1-2-1 gym induction session, how to plan and teach gym exercise sessions. From here, instructors may wish to progress to the Level 3 Certificate in Personal Training.
Target candidates
This course is designed for:
- Exercise and fitness enthusiasts who wish to become Gym Instructors
- Those who wish to take the first steps to being a Personal Trainer
- Individuals who wish to change career
- Those who are already working as Fitness Instructors but who have few or no relevant qualifications
Prerequisites
Candidates must be aged 16 or over.
Course description
The online course covers the theoretical elements of the following subjects:
- Level 2 Anatomy & Physiology for Exercise
- Cardio-respiratory system
- Bones, joints and joint action
- Muscles and muscle actions
- Energy systems
- Nervous system
- Health, Safety & Welfare in a Fitness Environment
- Emergency procedures
- Risk control
- Health and safety requirements
- Principles of Exercise, Fitness and Health
- Components of fitness
- Principles of fitness
- Health benefits of exercise
- Healthy eating
- Supporting Clients in Exercise and Physical Activity
- Effective working relationships with clients
- Barriers to exercise
- Customer service
- Planning and instructing gym-based exercise
- Safe and effective warm-up
- Cardiovascular training
- Resistance machine and free weight training
- Cool down, including exercises to develop flexibility
The course includes Four Practical Training Days held at the YMCA in Cambridge.
The Theory is studied online. Students are allowed 215 days to complete the online study and will automatically be added to the next practical course dates.
Assessment procedure
Assessment is conducted at the YMCA in Cambridge and is in six parts:
- Multiple choice Anatomy & Physiology Theory Paper
- Health, Safety & Welfare Worksheet
- Multiple choice Principles of Exercise, Fitness & Health Theory Paper
- Support Clients in Exercise & Physical Activity Worksheet
- Plan and prepare a Gym-based exercise session
- Instruct and evaluate a Gym-based exercise session
YMCA Awards Certificate in Fitness Instruction Gym, Level 2 (Practical Elements only)
For instructors who have already achieved and hold Level 2 Mandatory Units. This could include Exercise to Music or Water-based Exercise instructors. The course covers correct technique and safe and effective use of gym equipment, including cardiovascular equipment, resistance machines and free weights. You will learn how to carry out 1-2-1 gym induction sessions and how to plan and teach gym exercise sessions. From here, instructors may wish to progress to the Level 3 Certificate or Diploma in Personal Training.
Target candidates
Instructors who have already achieved the Level 2 Certificate in Fitness Instruction and who also wish to qualify as a Gym Instructor, Exercise to Music or Water-based instructors who wish to become Personal Trainers.
For example: if you are a fully qualified Level 2 Exercise to Music Instructor and would like to qualify as a Gym Instructor, you only need to take the practical element of the Certificate in Fitness Instruction Gym.

Candidates must already hold:
- NVQ Level 2 Mandatory Units.
