Reaching Personal Trainer Status
The Conversion of Advanced Fitness Instructor to Personal Trainer award, comprises two course modules – Level 3 Upskilling to Personal Trainer and Level 3 Nutrition for Physical Activity.
The award recognises the skills and learning achieved by instructors who have completed the Level 3 Certificate in Advanced Gym Instruction and covers the additional learning required to allows candidates to attain Personal Trainer status without duplicating learning.
PREREQUISITES
Candidates must already hold:
- Level 3 Certificate in Advanced Fitness Instruction – Gym
- Candidates who have already achieved Level 3 Applying the Principles of Nutrition to a Physical Activity Programme, or Level 3 Nutrition & Weight Management, will not need to repeat the Nutrition fro Physical Activity Unit.
Note: candidates who have completed Level 3 Client Lifestyle & Fitness Assessment will not need to repeat Learning Outcome 4 of this Upskilling Unit.
UNIT 1: UPSKILLING TO PERSONAL TRAINER – COURSE DESCRIPTION
The Online course covers the theoretical elements of the following subjects:
- Anatomy and Physiology, Level 3
- Cardiovascular system
- Endocrine system
- Programming personal training with clients
- Different environments and equipment
- Fitness testing and taking measurements
- The course includes One Practical Training Day held at the YMCA in Cambridge.
ASSESSMENT PROCEDURE
Assessment is held at the YMCA in Cambridge:
- Multiple choice Theory Paper and Viva
- Observed practical assessment of physical measurements
PRACTICAL TRAINING AND ASSESSMENT DATES: dates to be be arranged on application.
Prerequisites Any of the following qualifications are essential pre-requisites to this course. CYQ Certificate in Applying the Principles of Nutrition to a Physical Activity Programme, Level 3 View details
An insight into healthy eating and weight management
The Certificate in Nutrition for Physical Activity is the second of the two course modules that make up the new CYQ Certificate in Personal Training. It can also be taken as a stand-alone qualification.
The course covers nutrients, energy systems, measuring and eating for energy and the physiology and psychology of dieting. It also covers the principles of healthy eating and weight management in relation to exercise, sports and well-being and will enable the Personal Trainer to give advice on and plan for effective long-term fat/weight loss, based on sound scientific principles.
TARGET CANDIDATES
This course is designed for:
- Instructors who are seeking to work towards the CYQ Certificate in Personal Training Advanced Fitness Instructors who wish to upskill to Personal Trainer status
- Those who wish to provide appropriate nutritional advice for a variety of client needs Gym or Group Exercise (Studio) Instructors or Fitness Supervisors who are seeking to enhance their qualifications
PREREQUISITES
Candidates must be aged 18 or over and must already hold:
- Level 2 Certificate in Fitness Instruction or equivalent
Note: if applying for the full Certificate in Personal Training, candidates must hold a Level 2 Certificate in Gym Instruction
If applying for the Conversion to Personal Trainer status award, candidates must hold a Level 3 Certificate in Advanced Fitness Instruction

- Giving nutritional advice
- The relationship between nutrition and physical activity
- How to collect nutritional information

Assessment of qualification is conducted at the YMCA in Cambridge and is in two parts:

Advanced programming to meet a broad range of client goals
The Personal Training, Advanced Instruction course, together with Applying the Principles of Nutrition to a Physical Activity Programme, makes up the full CYQ Certificate in Personal Training. The course covers Anatomy and Physiology Level 3, Programming Personal Training with Clients and Delivering Personal Training Sessions.
TARGET CANDIDATES
This course is designed for:
- Individuals working towards the CYQ Certificate in Personal Training
- Gym Instructors or Fitness Supervisors who are seeking to enhance their qualifications
- Those who are already working as Advanced Instructors but who lack a recognised qualification
PREREQUISITES
Candidates must be aged 18 or over and must already hold:
Level 2 Certificate in Gym Instruction

- Screening, preparing and planning

- Managing, reviewing and adapting programmes
- Delivering personal training sessions
- Advanced instruction
- Monitoring progress
- Encouragement and support
The course includes seven Practical Training Days and one Anatomy & Physiology Revision Day held at the YMCA in Cambridge.
In addition to the full online material, you will receive the CYQ Level 3 Anatomy & Physiology Manual on the Revision Day to assist you with your learning and revision for the theory paper.
ASSESSMENT PROCEDURE
Assessment is held at the YMCA in Cambridge:
- Multiple choice Anatomy and Physiology Theory Paper
- Observed practical assessment of physical measurements
- Client profile
- Detailed 4 week personal training programme
- Overview of 12 week personal training programme
- Viva – questions on the programme
- Observed practical assessment of advanced training skills and application of advanced systems
- Note: your client will take part in the assessment
- Self-evaluation of your performance

CYQ Certificate in Personal Training, Level 3 – Overview View details
The Certificate in Personal Training consists of two course modules – Advanced Instruction Personal Training and Nutrition for Physical Activity. The Diploma covers the above two modules together with Business and Marketing Skills.
The core competencies for a successful career in Personal Training
The aim of this qualification is to recognise the skills, knowledge and competence required for an individual to work unsupervised as a Personal Trainer. This includes being able to offer one-to-one training, baseline assessment, nutritional advice and progressive programming which is specific to the individual needs of a client. The Certificate and Diploma are recognised by the Register of Exercise Professionals (REPs) at Level 3.
